Next Meeting-Thursday November 7th

Be sure to make it out to our November 7th meeting! We will be having a special guest speaker, Lisa Hill. Lisa will also be a vendor for the night. She has had a home base business for 15 years selling quilting books, patterns and notions. Lisa does not charge tax and accepts cash, cheques and credit cards. Special orders are always welcomed. Please bring a quilting friend to the meeting and make a list of those notions, patterns and/or books you've been wanting – I'm sure Lisa will have something for you! I know that Lisa will be bringing the big cones of thread by Cansew – they have 6000 yards on a cone! The cone I have on my machine right now is from February 2011 and I do all my piecing with this thread and some quilting also, it's a good bang for your buck.

Our name of Jesus this month is Priest, Prophet and the block of the month is Courthouse Steps.

Just a reminder of our Christmas meeting in December – we will be having a pot-"blessing" (pot-luck) dinner and a guest speaker, Georgeann Welsh who was the owner of the Sew & Sew quilt shop in Essex. Dinner will be at 6:00PM and our meeting will begin at 7:00PM. Once again at the Christmas dinner, if you would like to join in, we will be doing a $5.00 gift exchange. And why not bring some Christmas show and tell!
We have a new idea for our Christmas dinner as well (only if you have time to join in, don't feel obligated.). See the article below on Prayer Flags – we thought it might be a nice idea to trade Christmas Prayer Flags.
Make a Prayer Flag as described below with your prayer for Christmas and/or the New Year, bring the flag to the Christmas meeting where we will hang them up and trade them at the end of the meeting. Everyone who brings one can go home with one to hang up for the holidays.

Prayer Flags

Prayer flags can be as sturdy or delicate as you like, but keep in mind that it is quite possible the recipient will be placing your prayer flags outside, such as hanging off the railing of a front porch. Prayer flags are celebrated and cherished for their frayed, weathered look, so feel free to upcycle those vintage table lines too worn or stained for daily use.  The suggested size for this particular prayer flag trade at Fall Festival is in the range of 5″ w x 6″h, and make sure to stitch a sleeve across the top for a piece of cording or string to slip through. Some of my very favorite prayer flags are by
Vivika Denegre, who challenged herself to make a prayer flag every day for the month of June a couple years ago. She recently told me that she spent just one hour each day making them, using materials she had on hand.

Simple two-step construction instructions:
1. Cut your background fabric to size, about 5″ x 6″ for this trade, and fold over the top by about 1″ to the back. Machine stitch closed to create the sleeve at the top. Don't worry about the fabric fraying along the sides, that's part of the prayer flag's charm!
2. Now the fun part: time to stitch and embellish! You are limited only by your imagination for materials and techniques. Feel free to combine paper and fabric, too!
